What are the sub-genres of Teen Drama films

What are the sub-genres of Teen Drama films?

Sub-genres are another way of categorising films. Teen films can be separated into two sub-genres: Youth and High-School Drama.

Youth Drama

Youth dramas have less support than high school dramas. This type of film focuses on the social problems a main character faces, which is often shown through a male character. These films tend to portray a rebellious main character challenging a figure of authority and being in conflict with other characters. It highlights the difficulties experienced by adolescents and portrays youth as difficult and problematic. This type of film is very popular among teenagers.

High School Drama

This type of film was popular in the 1970s to the 1990s. There was a lot of variation with the sub-genre. It focuses on the socialisation of teenagers or young adults in an institution: school, college, and universe or at home. They usually celebrate youth or the coming of age. They tend to be focused on girls, but usually have a male lead. They usually involve change, make-overs or conflict between different groups in an institution.
