Favourite Films Analysis

Spider-Man (2002)

Spider-Man Opening Title Sequence

Spider-Man (2002) has been one of my favourite films for many years. This blockbuster action, fantasy and adventure film was a source of entertainment for me during my early childhood. I watched it dozens of times to the point that I could almost explain the entire story. Other than the fact it's my favourite film, the film incorporates an amazing title sequence. The title sequence for this film starts with a series of scenes from a Marvel comic book. This indicates a clear link between the film and Marvel. It shows that the film was adapted from the Marvel comic book. In the background, we hear dynamic music getting faster and louder; this type of music builds tension and gives the audience an idea about the genre and what is to come in the film.

The beginning of this sequence slowly brings in the name of the comic publishing company that the film has been adapted from, Marvel. It reveals the film industry responsible for the production of the film, which is Columbia Pictures. This is followed by the producer, which is introduced alongside another highlight that the film is a Marvel entertainment. This indicates that the producer is just as important as Marvel. Then it shows the film title, Spider-Man, which made a spiral entrance. This spiral entrance of the title is very effective as it resembles the way a web is made by a spider. The font is white like a spider web. The font resembles a spider web, which strengthens the title sequences aesthetic value. It shows that the designer carefully thought about the design of the typography. After the title is shown, the film begins to introduce the cast, which consist of twelve. These twelve cast members are the main people in the film. The font and color of these titles is the same as the film's title. However, the one major difference is how these titles are distorted and don't have a baseline like the film title. The letters for these titles are disorientated to create the effect of them being stuck on the spider webs. Then it introduces the two people responsible for the casting. After the casting, the film begins to reveal the remaining credits: the co-producer, who the music is by, costume designer, visual effects designer, the two editors, production designer, director of photography, executive producer, 2 more producers (meaning a total of 3). This order could suggest importance and the order of role significance. However, I don't believe this is the cast, I am simply suggesting this could be true. It then highlights that the film is based on Marvel. After indicating what the film is based on, it begins to reveal more credits, such as the screenplay and the director.

Throughout the sequence we would see intertwining webs to give an impression of Spider-Man. We briefly see Spider-Man's nemesis, the Green Goblin and some of the buildings he scales through-out the series.
